The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carleton University is accepting applications for a postdoctoral fellowship in Green Solar Integration. The preferred start date is September 2025, but fall and winter 2025 start dates will also be considered, with a duration of 12 months, with the possibility of renewal up to a three-year period. The postdoctoral fellow will conduct research related to the testing of green-solar roofing systems in the Canadian climate.

Eligibility Criteria for Carleton University Drake Stormwater Research Group Post-Doc Fellowship 2025

The incumbent of this position will, under the direction of Dr. Drake, be responsible for leading the research activities of the project, including but not limited to the following core responsibilities:

  1. Design, execute, and analyze experimental and modeling studies related to green roof and PV system integration.
  2. Assess the microclimatic interactions between vegetation and PV panels (e.g., temperature regulation, shading, cooling effects).
  3. Develop or refine simulation models to evaluate energy output, stormwater management performance, and building-scale sustainability impacts.
  4. Coordinate field monitoring campaigns involving sensors (e.g., temperature, moisture, solar irradiance, runoff).
  5. Collaborate with stakeholders from academia, industry, and federal governments.
  6. Publish findings in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and present at national and international conferences.
  7. Mentor graduate and undergraduate students involved in the project.
  8. Support funding proposals and the development of knowledge mobilization materials.

Job Requirements

  1. A doctoral degree in Engineering (Civil, Environmental, Water Resources, Renewable Energy) or a related field.
  2. Demonstrated research experience in green infrastructure, building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), or sustainable building systems.
  3. Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
  4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  5. Experience with modeling tools (e.g., EnergyPlus, SWMM, ENVI-met) and/or data analysis software (e.g., R, Python, MATLAB).

  1. Preferences will be given to candidates with strong quantitative skills and a proven publication record in one or more of the following areas: green roofs, low-impact development, renewable energy
  2. Hands-on experience completing field research studies and experience working with environmental monitoring equipment, soil analysis methods and equipment, environmental data sensors and loggers (e.g. , Onset, Campbell Scientific)

The postdoctoral fellow will be offered a salary of $70,000 per annum, with the additional ability to opt into an extended health and dental benefits plan.
