The Lavery Further Education Award was created with an aim to promote greater access to Queen’s University for students coming from Further and Higher Education Institutions in Northern Ireland.

Having spent 25 years working at Belfast Metropolitan College, Lorraine Lavery is a passionate believer in the transformative power of higher education and the need to promote greater access to University to students coming from Further and Higher Education Institutions.

Eligibility Criteria for Lavery Further Education Award at Queen's University Belfast 2025

All eligible candidates will be required to submit a short application form online. Candidates will be asked to identify which WP programme they are completing and/or if they are Care Experienced, and which of the WP criteria they meet as follows:

1. Being in receipt of a means-tested benefit such as Housing Benefit or Universal Credit
2. Being in the care of a Health and Social Care Trust or Local Authority for three months or more
3. Being from a disadvantaged area (Quintile 1) as defined by NISRA (Northern Ireland Statistical Research Agency). Quintile 1 (Q1) represents the 20% most deprived areas and this information will be verified by the QUB Planning Office (Finance).
4. Being in receipt of Disabled Students Allowance
5. Being the main carer for a family member or dependant.

Candidates will also be asked to answer the following question in 250 words or fewer:
