Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom. Up to fifty Scholars are selected each year to study at a graduate level at a UK institution in any field of study.

As future leaders with a lasting understanding of British society, Marshall Scholars strengthen the enduring relationship between the British and American peoples, their governments, and their institutions. Marshall Scholars are talented, independent, and wide-ranging, and their time as Scholars enhances their intellectual and personal growth. Their direct engagement with Britain through its best academic programmes contributes to their ultimate personal success.

Eligibility Criteria for Marshall Scholarships 2026

  1. Be citizens of the United States of America (at the time they apply for a scholarship);
  2. (By the time they take up their scholarship i.e. September 2026) hold their first undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States;
  3. Have obtained a grade point average of not less than 3.7 on their undergraduate degree at the time of application. We do not accept rounded GPA’s.
  4. Have graduated from their first undergraduate college or university after April 2023.
  5. Not have studied for, or hold a degree or degree-equivalent qualification from a British University or GCSE or A Levels taken at school in the UK.
  6. Selection Process

    The selection criteria are divided into three equally weighted categories:

    1. Academic Merit
    2. Leadership Potential
    3. Ambassadorial Potential

University fees, cost of living expenses, annual book grant, thesis grant, research and daily travel grants, fares to and from the United States and, where applicable, a contribution towards the support of a dependent spouse.

  1. Candidates are responsible for completing the online application form and submitting it through the system to their undergraduate institution.
  2. The institution will then ensure that the application is complete and make a decision whether they wish to endorse the application or not.
  3. If the Institution elects to endorse the application, they will add a letter of endorsement on behalf of the candidate and will then submit it through the system to the appropriate regional committee.
  4. Candidates are advised to contact their undergraduate institution as soon as possible if they are considering applying for a Marshall Scholarship.
