Applications are now open for the 2025 Code for Africa (CfA) WanaData Fellowships. Code for Africa (CfA) is offering stipend-based Fellowships to fourteen (14) African Data Scientists and storytellers to empower youth voices and promote a secure digital space through gender projects.

These Fellowships are part of a joint initiative between Code for Africa, the European Partnership for Democracy (EPD), AfricTivistes, CFI Media Development, the World Scout Bureau Africa Regional Office, and the Kofi Annan Foundation (KAF), with contributions from the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD). This initiative, under the WanaData Initiative, aims to address content gaps on gender projects related to the African Union Convention on Cybersecurity and Personal Data Protection, e-democracy, digital mobilization in social movements, SDG16, freedom of expression, and human rights in the Sahel region, neighboring West Africa, and the Horn of Africa.

Eligibility Criteria for Code for Africa (CfA) WanaData Fellowships 2025 for Women Data Scientists and Storytellers (USD 250 monthly stipend)

Applicants must:

  1. Be a registered WanaData member with at least one (1) year of experience as a data scientist or data storyteller (activists, campaigners, media content creators, influencers, journalists, etc.). You must have a portfolio of published work you can share.
  2. Ideally, be based in the Sahel region, neighbouring West Africa, or the Horn of Africa (exceptional applicants from elsewhere in Africa may be considered)
  3. Be fluent in English or French (Bilingual is a plus)
  4. Have a keen interest in digital rights, gender, and youth civic engagement
  5. Have experience in gender data research
  6. Possess an interest in the fellowship’s thematic focus, including cybersecurity and Personal Data Protection, e-democracy, digital mobilisation in social movements, gender SDG16, freedom of expression, and human rights, among others. Demonstrate the ability to track contributions and submit reports efficiently.
  7. Be willing to participate in mentorship, training, and outreach activities.
  8. Comply with WanaData’s policies on attribution, privacy, and friendly space guidelines.


Benefits of Code for Africa (CfA) WanaData Fellowships 2025 for Women Data Scientists and Storytellers (USD 250 monthly stipend)

  1. Award amount: Each Fellow receives a stipend of USD 250 per month
  2. Additional support: Hands-on fact-checking and technical training, one-on-one mentorship, and ongoing support from CfA’s Communities and Academy Team.
