Japan Announces Fully Funded 2026 JSPS Fellowships for International Researchers – Apply

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) has officially launched its FY 2026 International Fellowship Programs for overseas researchers. These prestigious fellowships offer full funding to conduct research at Japan’s leading universities and institutes in the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. The program is designed to foster global academic exchange, allowing researchers to collaborate closely with Japanese hosts and contribute meaningfully to international research excellence.
Eligible Fields
The following fields are eligible: natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities.
Eligibility Criteria for Japan Announces Fully Funded 2026 JSPS Fellowships for International Researchers – Apply
The eligibility criteria include:
- Postdoctoral Fellowships [P/PE]:
- Must hold a PhD or obtain one before the fellowship start date
- PhD must have been obtained on or after April 2, 2020
- Must be a citizen of a country with diplomatic ties to Japan
- Not eligible: those with Japanese citizenship or permanent residency in Japan
- Invitational Fellowships [L/S]:
- Must have a professor or associate professor–equivalent status
- Must be affiliated full-time with a foreign institution
- Must have a strong record of research contributions
Selection Process
Applicants are selected based on academic qualifications, research achievements, and the potential impact of their proposed collaboration with the Japanese host institution.

All categories offer comprehensive financial support, including:
- Roundtrip airfare
- Monthly stipends:
- ¥362,000 for Postdoctoral Fellows
- ¥387,600 for Long-Term Invited Fellows
- ¥18,000/day for Short-Term Invited Fellows
- Settling-in allowance: ¥200,000
- Research support grant: Up to ¥150,000 (for applicable categories)
- Overseas travel insurance

Each fellowship category has its own deadlines:
- Postdoctoral Fellowship [P]: August 29, 2025 & April 28, 2026
- Postdoctoral Short-Term [PE]: September 26, 2025, January 9, 2026 & June 5, 2026
- Invitational Fellowship—Long-Term [L]: August 29, 2025
- Invitational Fellowship—Short-Term [S]: August 29, 2025 & April 28, 2026
