John J. Sweeney Scholarship 2026 at Ulster University

The John J. Sweeney Scholarship supports U.S. students pursuing full-time postgraduate study (MA or MSc) at Ulster University. Named after AFL-CIO President Emeritus John J. Sweeney, this award recognizes his lifelong dedication to advancing the rights and well-being of working people. The scholarship provides $20,000 toward tuition and related study expenses.

Eligibility Criteria for John J. Sweeney Scholarship 2026 at Ulster University

The Scholarship will be open to all US citizens who:

  1. Have been offered a full-time place on one of the above MSc or MA and have made a firm commitment to Ulster University during the admissions phase;
  2. Are a US union member; or;
  3. Have a familial connection to a US union member (mother, father, sibling, aunt, uncle, grandparent); or;
  4. Can provide a reference letter from a union sponsor.

  1. The John J Sweeney Scholarship has a value of $20,000 and that is used towards the Scholar’s tuition fees for an MA or MSc at Ulster University.

How to Apply

  1. Candidates must apply via the online application form.
  2. Applicants must ensure that all sections of the application form are completed with all additional requirements attached to the application.
  3. These include:

    1. Scanned copy of original degree certificate demonstrating achievement of GPA of 2.8 or above
    2. Where applicable, reference letter from a US Union sponsor
    3. 500-750-word personal statement
    4. Two academic reference letters
    5. A scanned copy of their US passport
