Chevening Scholarships are the UK government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organizations.

The Chevening Scholarship 2026 programme offers awards to outstanding scholars with leadership potential from around the world to study for a master’s degree in any subject at any UK university.

Chevening Scholarships are aimed at international postgraduates with high leadership potential, enabling them to study a master's at a British university and develop useful professional/academic networks.

These connections can then be used to build a strong relationship with the UK and make a positive impact in your home country.

Eligibility Criteria for UK Government Chevening Fully Funded Scholarship 2026

To be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship, you must:

  1. Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory.
  2. Commit to returning to your home country for at least two years after your scholarship ends.
  3. Have at least two years (equivalent to 2,800 hours) of work experience.
  4. Hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies you for a UK master’s programme.
  5. Apply to three different and eligible UK university courses. You must have received an unconditional offer from at least one of these course choices by the references and education documents deadline listed on the application timeline.

Note that the use of AI in the application process is strictly forbidden.

I already have a Master’s degree. Can I still apply for a Chevening Scholarship?

Yes, having a master’s degree does not prevent you from applying for a Chevening Award to study for a second master’s degree in the UK, as long as you can clearly explain why it will help you fulfill your career plan to influence positive change in your home country.

Required Documents for Chevening Scholarship 2026

All Chevening applicants must submit their education documents, references, and one unconditional UK university offer.

These documents include;

  1. Admission offer to a UK university
  2. Reference Letters
  3. Academic Transcripts
  4. Degree Certificates
  5. Personal Statement
  6. Scholarship Essays & Motivation Letters
  7. English Language Proficiency Certificates

If you are conditionally selected for a Chevening Scholarship, it is essential that you submit these documents in order to remain in the process.

Questions for Self-Examination

1. Do you have strong examples of your leadership and influencing skills?

To be one of the top 1% of applicants awarded a Chevening Scholarship, you must provide examples of taking the lead and influencing others.

You should focus on examples with clear results.

This could include:

  1. Driving change in your community or organisation
  2. Improving outcomes for others
  3. Solving a specific challenge
  4. Successfully implementing a project or idea that had a tangible impact

2. Do you have good examples of building professional relationships to achieve positive outcomes?

Effective leaders are good at building relationships. If you’re awarded a Chevening Scholarship, there will be plenty of opportunities to connect with other leaders in your field.

We’re looking for examples of how you’ve built strong relationships and how collaboration led to real, measurable outcomes.

Tell us about how you brought people together, and how your efforts contributed to meaningful change, whether in your organisation, community, or beyond.

3. How does your career plan address both local and global challenges in alignment with UK priority areas?

We’re looking for applicants who can present a clear, realistic, and achievable post-study career plan, that shows a genuine commitment to addressing some of the most pressing challenges of our time.

Your career plan must have clear, measurable goals.

You’ll also be asked to demonstrate how your chosen course will equip you with the knowledge and skills to tackle challenges that matter to your home country and in areas aligned with the UK government’s global priorities, which include:

  1. Promoting growth and prosperity
  2. Building resilience in a climate-vulnerable world
  3. Strengthening security and stability in a volatile world
  4. Supporting development for more inclusive and effective societies

4. How will your chosen courses support your ambitions to drive change?

To be chosen for Chevening, you must clearly articulate, in your own words, how a Chevening Scholarship will support your goals for tackling local and global challenges.

Selection Process

  1. 5th August, 2025: Application Opens
  2. 7th October, 2025: Application Closes
  3. October 2025: Applicants are filtered using the eligibility criteria
  4. Mid-October 2025 to January 2026: Applications are accessed
  5. Mid-February 2026: Applicants are shortlisted for interviews
  6. March - April 2026: Shortlisted applicants are interviewed
  7. Mid-June 2026: Results are announced
  8. 9th July, 2026: Deadline to submit your unconditional offer from a UK University
  9. September/October 2026: Studies Begin

To be invited to an interview, you must:

  1. Show that you’ve researched your three chosen courses and explain how each one connects to your background, career aspirations, and the impact you hope to make.
  2. Describe how specific modules or areas of study will equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to achieve your goals.
  3. Demonstrate a genuine willingness to collaborate with the UK in tackling shared global and local challenges, such as advancing growth and prosperity, strengthening security, building climate resilience, or supporting sustainable development.
