University of British Columbia Andrew Nord Fellowships in Rheumatology 2025

A number of University awards for the upcoming academic year are available to current and incoming graduate students. drew Nord suffered from the effects of arthritis from the age of 15 and the goal for his bequest is "to prevent the disease from its devastating onslaught, to find better ways to live with the disease, and to find the cause, leading to a cure once and for all." Doctoral students engaged in rheumatology research in any faculty at UBC are eligible to apply for the fellowships.

Eligibility Criteria for University of British Columbia Andrew Nord Fellowships in Rheumatology 2025

Registration Status

Students must be registered, full-time graduate students during the period of the award (September 2025 to August 2026). Incoming students (ie. will start in September 2025 or January 2026) are also eligible to apply (ex. a successful Spring Awards applicant starting in January 2026 could receive funding covering January to August 2026).

Program Eligibility

Eligible graduate programs must have a significant research component. A significant research component is considered to be original, autonomous research that leads to the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital, and/or exhibit that is merit/expert-reviewed at the institutional level as a requirement for completion of the program.

With the exception of those programs listed below, students in all fields of graduate study are eligible to apply. Exceptions:

1. Programs that are not administered by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (such as MBA, MM, MDS)
2. Programs that do not include a significant research component (ie. coursework-based programs such as MPPGA, MOT, MPH, MPT, and MKIN)
3. Doctor of Pharmacy

Research ability or potential

1. Quality of contributions to research and development
2. Relevance of work experience and academic training to field of proposed research
3. Significance, feasibility, and merit of proposed research, and justification for location of tenure

6. Judgment
7. Originality
8. Initiative and autonomy
9. Enthusiasm for research
10. Determination and ability to complete projects within an appropriate period of time

Communication, interpersonal and leadership abilities

1. The ability or potential to communicate scientific concepts clearly and logically in written and oral formats. For example, this could include:
2. quality of the application's presentation
3. participation in preparing publications
4. awards for oral presentations or papers
5. Professional and relevant extracurricular interactions and collaborations. For example, this could include:
6. mentoring
7. teaching
8. supervisory experience
9. project management
10. chairing committees
11. organizing conferences and meetings
12. elected positions held

Benefits of University of British Columbia Andrew Nord Fellowships in Rheumatology 2025

1. $25,000/year for a maximum of four years (total duration of 4YF, external scholarship funding and/or internal scholarship funding awarded through a university, wide competition, if applicable) or until the end of the fifth year of their doctoral program, whichever comes first.
