Under the UWS Vice-Chancellor’s Studentship Scheme 2025, eight funded PhD studentships are offered for October 2025 start. These highly selective studentships span the University’s four academic schools:

  1. Business & Creative Industries
  2. Computing, Engineering & Physical Sciences
  3. Education & Social Sciences
  4. Health & Life Sciences

The studentship themes are aligned with the University’s strategic ambitions and underline the University’s commitment to distinctive research and innovation, and addressing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Successful applicants will be aligned to their relevant UWS academic School and also become part of the UWS Doctoral College, providing an outstanding quality experience, supporting your student journey and focusing on investment and development in training, resources and facilities.

The funded studentships are open to UK citizens and applicants with pre-settled or settled status.

Entry Requirements

Postgraduate Research students work at the forefront of their academic subject and contribute to the advancement of knowledge.

To be a successful researcher, you must be passionate about your subject area, with enthusiasm for research and analysis, and the motivation to manage a personal learning programme. You will have already demonstrated research aptitude in undergraduate or masters-level studies.

Entry onto a postgraduate research degree normally requires you to have obtained a good Honours degree (First or Upper Second Class) or a postgraduate taught or research qualification in a relevant area of study.

English Language Requirements

For applicants whose first language is not English, the University sets a minimum English Language proficiency level. The qualifications below must have been gained within two years of the start of your course.

General English language requirements at UWS: International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic module (not General Training)

For our research degrees (MRes, MPhil, PhD, DBA, DProf), applicants are required to have an IELTS score as follows:

  1. overall score of 6.5
  2. no sub-test less than 6.0

Equivalent scores in another recognized qualification are listed below, as are details of our pre-sessional English Language courses for those who do not meet the required English language criteria prior to commencing their studies.

  1. Funding will cover UK fees and they will also receive an annual stipend (currently £20,780).

How to Apply

You can apply for postgraduate research at UWS via their free online application system.

As part of the application process, you will need to provide digital copies of the following documents:

  1. copy of your degree certificate(s)
  2. copy of your academic transcript(s)
  3. English language proficiency test certificate (if English is not your first language)
  4. At least one academic reference, signed and on headed paper or sent from the referee’s work email account (if you do not hold the reference please provide the email address of your academic referee).
  5. A research proposal

Once you are ready, you can submit your application through their online application system. You can apply for a postgraduate research degree right up to the start of the intake.
