University of Glasgow Sanctuary Scholarship 2026/27

The University of Glasgow Sanctuary Scholarship has been created to support applicants with Refugee or Asylum Seeker status who are currently living in the UK and hold an offer to study with us in the 2026/27 academic year. The scholarship is open to prospective undergraduate and postgraduate taught students at the University of Glasgow applying for entry in September 2026/27. Please note that you must have applied to the University before submitting an application for this scholarship.

This scholarship provides a full tuition fee waiver along with financial support for living costs, helping recipients focus on their studies and thrive both academically and personally.

Eligibility Criteria for University of Glasgow Sanctuary Scholarship 2026/27

This scholarship is not available to PGdip, PDGE or part time programmes.

Undergraduate students with refugee status (or equivalent) and access to funding, are eligible to apply for the scholarship and would receive the £5,000 stipend towards study costs only, if successful.

Postgraduate Taught Masters students with refugee status (or equivalent) and access to funding, are eligible to apply for the scholarship and would receive the £5,000 stipend towards study costs and a partial tuition fee waiver, to cover any shortfall not met by your Postgraduate Masters tuition fee loan.

To be eligible applicants must:

  1. Hold a firm conditional or unconditional offer for full time study at the University of Glasgow for 2026/27
  2. You must currently be located in the United Kingdom and have Home or RUK fee status.
  3. Have submitted a claim for asylum in the UK OR are actively appealing a negative decision on a claim for asylum in the UK OR have been granted Refugee Status, Humanitarian Protection (HP) or Discretionary Leave (DL) by the Home Office as a result of an asylum claim.
  4. OR

Have come to the UK through schemes such as:

  1. UK Resettlement Scheme (UKRS)
  2. Afghan citizens Resettlement Scheme
  3. Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP)
  4. Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme (VPRS)
  5. Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme (Homes for Ukraine)
  6. Ukraine Family Scheme

Benefits of University of Glasgow Sanctuary Scholarship 2026/27

The Sanctuary Scholarship provides:

  1. Full tuition fee waiver for the duration of study, where you are not eligible to apply for mainstream student finance to cover full tuition fees
  2. £5,000 per year towards for study costs

Should your immigration status change partway through your studies, you should inform the Scholarships Team as soon as possible, as this may affect your eligibility for the scholarship. Changes to immigration status will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. The scholarship funding will not necessarily cease automatically but may be recalculated.

Please note that University accommodation is not included in the Sanctuary Scholarship. Applicants will therefore need to cover their own accommodation costs or already live within a reasonable commuting distance of the University.

We also have a small number of donor-funded scholarships, which cover the £5,000 stipend only. Please note that by submitting an application for the Sanctuary scholarships, you will also be considered for the donor funded awards.

• Application Registration Card (ARC) or Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)—Front AND Back

• Immigration Bail Reporting Notice (this may also be referred to as a Temporary Admission Document or BAIL 201)—please include every page of this document.

OR

If you are not subject to Home Office Temporary Admission/Immigration Bail Reporting, please provide your:

• Application Registration Card (ARC) or Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)—Front AND Back

• The most recent documentation you have received from the Home Office in conjunction with your application/appeal—this should show your Home Office reference number.

OR

A share code provided by the UK government that can prove your right to study in the UK.

IMPORTANT EVISA INFORMATION

- If you have a BRP expiring on 31st December 2025, but your overall visa permission is longer than this, you must take action now. More information can be found here or by emailing the immigration compliance team (immigrationcompliance@glasgow.ac.uk)
